in the off-season

although towards the end of last year I was beginning to suffer from art-fatigue
I'm definitely ready to start going to openings again, there is the chance to see new work,
catching up with friends and the free alcohol doesn't hurt either.
in the meantime I've been sniffing around the city trying to find important moments.

isobel thom has some works at te uru in titirangi. you must go and enjoy the views, the staircases
and the yellow linoleum. also melbourne-based art historian jan bryant has written a catalogue essay.

miss kate

the eternal kate newby in mexico city and mousse magazine.
the way she suspended works from string travelling through the gallery
into the little courtyard out the back. and even left a small cement work on the street too.

bare necessities

'something that is very domestic, like a bowl that sits on the breakfast table
and is privy to the most intimate goings-on in that family,
if that can be adding a little uplift, a little bit of joy or extra pleasure
to the goings-on at the table, then that's a wonderful thing...'
-richard parker

cool ceramics, bamboo, linen, wood-grain,
cane, muted tones and tea-pots.
unabashedly enamoured with almost
everything from everyday needs.
their website now has a little section with images of their wares
in their new homes.

c'est tout, ca

perhaps my favourite exhibition this year
suji park's
concretions and agglomerations...
this ceramic work
is partially tooth-like, rooty, chalky, layered
and almost like a suspended city...

flutter-tongue

tonguing and marking a page...
a stretch in material.
baked clay and paper and ink.
heaviness, weight and a pause in reading...

on or within a scenario

a large silken curtain has been steeped in fuschia-coloured dye.
air-dried pieces of ceramic sit safely within a vitrine,
and upon a mirror, so that when you go to look closer
you see your own reflection.

a sign declares that in fact, sometimes, whole days are spent inside...
and the sweltering midsummer means that this thought of cool weather
that would necessitate spending large periods of time in-doors is delicious.

a heavy hessian curtain hung from taut rope coloured a forest green.
and a voice could be head through a hole in the wall.

dark materials

teeth and bodies, straining and stretching.
suji park's ceramic figures posture upon
worn pedestals. finely detailed, cunning,
coloured and marked this offering is
palpable, beauteous and slightly diabolical.
