in the off-season

although towards the end of last year I was beginning to suffer from art-fatigue
I'm definitely ready to start going to openings again, there is the chance to see new work,
catching up with friends and the free alcohol doesn't hurt either.
in the meantime I've been sniffing around the city trying to find important moments.

isobel thom has some works at te uru in titirangi. you must go and enjoy the views, the staircases
and the yellow linoleum. also melbourne-based art historian jan bryant has written a catalogue essay.

missing you very much

the initiative known as circuit artist film and video aotearoa has begun its
summer reading series for those in need of some gentle stimulation in the warmer months.
six writers were chosen to write about a work from the archive that has left an impression upon them
and the first piece is a sensitive and thoughtful conversation between writer-curator extraordinaire
alex davidson and artist marie shannon in which they discuss shannon's the aachen faxes (2012).

intimacy, the prolongation of time and achingly large distances are among the topics discussed see here.

somewhat linked... currently screening at window gallery is a work from the chartwell collection, auckland art gallery, toi o tamaki, julian dashper's untitled (the last second of the last venice biennale) 2007-2008, a meditation on temporality and art world rituals.

also do take a glimpse at blackout.lt for little exquisite fragments and sections of projects that have stemmed from davidson's time in vilnus, lithuania, here. the talented will pollard is also involved and there is a mailing list that promises evidence of a screening, performance events, videos, text and recipes.

feasts of crustaceans and wines flow into bodies
whose knees rub underneath butcher paper covered tables...
our laughter bounces like cackles of satiated hens....
Hands slam the table in convivial consent...
Blow a balloon and let go of the string...
Awakening in another continent...

rainbow warriors of light

amy howden-chapman has two exhibitions on in auckland at the moment.
'advice for our aerial ocean' is in the mezzanine at artspace.
it looks at the examples of areas of land and river that have become legal entities
as a possible example for the atmosphere or aerial ocean.
there is sound, images, architectural interventions and places to read.
and at te uru in titirangi is 'they say ten thousand years'
an exploration of political mobilisation and motivation
through the lens of the new zealand nuclear free and peace movement.
in a lovely new gallery howden-chapman has placed textile works in glass,
video and audio works and text to be read on large brown corduroy cushions.

this creating of a space to pause, reflect and read in the midst of a gallery
 is quite captivating.

dance as a metaphor

starting to get excited about dancing for two hours straight
in the wee hours of the morning yet sober
as a designated dancer for the D.A.N.C.E art club
as part of ahi rands' 'w e l c o m e.'
I figure it can't be all that different from being a gallery guide
alone in a space for countless hours, seeing no-one
and with nothing to do but silently dance.

ps am also a big fan of 'they shoot horses don't they' (1969). that's where this image comes from.

il etait une fois...

one of the most perfect, magical and dreamy films ever
is screening this weekend at the starry civic theatre this weekend
jean cocteau's 'la belle et la bete' (1946)
is one of my most favourite films ever.
josette day's silent film like performance
and jean marais' wonderful gravel-y beasty voice...

to be sure to attend some of the performances
as part of 'to and fro' at artspace this month.
as part of her exhibition, curatorial assistant amelia hitchcock
has brought together a troupe of various artists
to converse in one way or another, drink coffee and
use artspace as a sort of watering-hole / laboratory for performance.
see here for a schedule, or sign up to the mailing list
to be notified of when performances will take place

darwin has always intrigued...
who knows what magic happens up there?

one thing is certain, melbourne-based artist
fiona williams has a small but perfectly formed exhibition
there at the moment, with a catalogue essay by yours truly.

enclave

just returned from across the ditch and the sydney biennale.
truth be told the absolute highlight was richard mosse's 'the enclave'
at the galleries UNSW in paddington.
this immersive and humbling film installation on six screens
was shot on infrared film in the eastern democratic republic of congo.
terrifying, terrible, tremulous and awe-inspiring.
