blow out

glass blown with the words
of stories of ghostly encounters
in liverpool.
dane mitchell's "spectral readings (liverpool)" are
so delicate, like concretised speech bubbles.

on or within a scenario

a large silken curtain has been steeped in fuschia-coloured dye.
air-dried pieces of ceramic sit safely within a vitrine,
and upon a mirror, so that when you go to look closer
you see your own reflection.

a sign declares that in fact, sometimes, whole days are spent inside...
and the sweltering midsummer means that this thought of cool weather
that would necessitate spending large periods of time in-doors is delicious.

a heavy hessian curtain hung from taut rope coloured a forest green.
and a voice could be head through a hole in the wall.

there is also a lovely essay "vertical histories"
by melbourne art-writer helen hughes

immersive, dark and bewildering...

mount gabriel, ruby and ash

amidst the clover, in a paddock in mangere
is a series of structures. part
yellowstone national park, part
yogi-bear, part school excursion, part
summer holiday. fiona connor's offering is
 refreshing, masterly and absurd.
it rewards the intrepid.

inthisholeonthisislandwhereiam

being driven rather than driving
around the motorways and leafy suburbs of auckland.
the surveying becomes the surveyed within a taxi.
via a route created by the artist we visited a house in epsom,
the home of the artist, perhaps?
the cats wondered what on earth we were doing there.
when we climbed back into the taxi mani the driver asked us
"what did you see?"
luke willis thompson's solo exhibition at hopkinson cundy is
courageous, thought-provoking, slightly disturbing
and quite wonderful.
